- Once melted, remove tallow from heat and add coconut oil
- Take a hand mixer and whip until well blended and light and fluffy
- Store in a glass jar
How to use homemade makeup remover
To use this DIY makeup remover, I take a small amount with my fingers and gently massage it on my eye area. Then I wipe with a soft washable cloth.
Can you use essential oils in makeup remover?
While there are plenty of essential oils with great benefits, I choose to leave them out of this recipe because of how close it is to my eyes. I don’t want the essential oils irritating my eyes.
After using this makeup remover, I wash my face with my favorite honey face wash recipe and then moisturize with tallow balm. Both of these homemade skincare products have skin friendly essential oils in them.
What is coconut oil?
Derived from the meat, skin, and wick of a coconut, this oil is edible and fantastic for the skin. Coconut oil has amazing anti microbial properties.
This solid white fat can be used for so many different things – cooking, skincare, and even removing your makeup after a long day! There are so many benefits to coconut oil that makes this recipe even more valuable.
What are the benefits of coconut oil?
The reason that coconut oil is so popular in skincare nowadays is that it is extremely beneficial for your skin – especially with the thin layers around your eyes.
Some of the benefits of using coconut oil are that it:
- Is antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiviral
- Minimizes the appearance of lines and wrinkles
- Provides antioxidants
- Smooths skin
- Is gentle enough to use around the eyes
Can you apply coconut oil on your face everyday?
Another thing I love about this eye makeup remover is that you can use it every day without worry that you are damaging your skin. Since a small amount of coconut oil can be applied to your face every day, this recipe is completely safe.
Can coconut oil clog your pores?
To those with extremely oily skin, it is good to be aware that the coconut oil can actually clog your pores and isn’t recommended.
If this is your situation, just use this makeup remover in the eye area and it should be fine. My skin definitely tends to be quite oily and I’ve never had an issue using this just to remove eye makeup.
What is a tallow?
Tallow is a type of animal fat that is extremely beneficial for our bodies. I cook with it almost every week and try to incorporate it into as many skincare products as I can – even my makeup remover.
There are so many benefits to using tallow, it’s surprising that we don’t see it in everything! Here are a few benefits for using tallow on the skin…
Benefits of using tallow
Tallow is full of amazing nutrients for the skin – and is the reason that this eye makeup remover is so effective and unique.
- Anti aging benefits
- Anti-inflammatory (great for under-eye bags after a rough day of chasing littles around)
- Deeply hydrating
Tallow balm is one of my all time favorite skincare products. Learn how to make tallow balm here.
Beef tallow vs mutton tallow
The two most common types of tallow are beef tallow and mutton tallow and either can be used for this recipe. We typically use beef, but that is because it is more available to my family than mutton tallow.
The difference between the two is that beef tallow comes from cow while mutton tallow comes from sheep.
Why should you stay away from store-bought makeup remover?
Makeup removers are famous for containing high amounts of preservatives that can cause a lot of harm to the body. As someone that tries to reduce the amount of toxins in her body, it seems like a no-brainer to make my own makeup remover at home.
Homemade makeup removers vs store bought makeup removers
Knowing whether you should start making your own homemade makeup remover or just use store bought makeup remover can be a difficult decision.
In reality, it is as simple as knowing the benefits to both products and making an educated choice to choose what works best for you. Both have advantages to them, but it really comes down to choosing what you need.
I personally prefer to avoid toxins found in commercial products, and make my own homemade skincare because I know it is perfectly safe and works very well.
How long does homemade makeup remover last?
If kept in an airtight container and stored at room temperature, this recipe should last for up to a year. For me, I found that using the measurements in this recipe means that I have enough makeup remover for about three to four months.
If you only need to use the homemade makeup remover on occasion, then I recommend storing it in the fridge so it lasts longer than a year. Just know that it can harden in colder temperatures so you might need to rub it between your fingers for a few minutes to soften it up before using it on your face.
